Teamwork amid tragedy

Sheriff Sadie Darnell, of the Alachua County Sherrif's Office, awarded those who helped during the I-75 accident.

In April, Alachua County Sheriff Sadie Darnell recognized UF and Shands staff members for their efforts in response to the string of accidents that killed 11 people on Interstate 75 Jan. 29. The Sheriff handed out 375 certificates and buttons to UF and Shands staff members who assisted in the response to the crashes, which occurred after smoke from wildfires in Paynes Prairie blanketed a stretch of I-75. In addition to the 11 who died, 22 people were injured. UF and Shands staff members helped care for and identify many of these victims. “Our brothers and sisters on the medical side of our community came together, and all of us worked together in a remarkable teamwork approach to attend to that unexpected, unpredicted disaster that happened in our community,” Darnell said.
