College of Dentistry

Mauricio Castellanos, D.D.S., was one of five U.S. university faculty members selected to participate in the Dentsply Implants University Ambassador Program in Chicago in October. Castellanos is an assistant professor in the department of restorative dental sciences’ division of prosthodontics.

Alex Delgado, D.D.S., received the 2015 Judson C. Hickey Scientific Writing Award in the Research Article Category from the American Prosthodontics Society for his article “Survival rate of lithium disilicate restorations at four years: A retrospective study,” published in The Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry. During the first six months of its publication, the article was downloaded more than 1,000 times.

John Neubert, D.M.D., Ph.D., an associate professor in the department of orthodontics, received an American Association of Orthodontics Foundation Award for Biomedical Research in recognition of his project, “Effects of genetics on the expectation and experience of orthodontic pain.”

Arthur Nimmo, D.D.S., FACP, was recently appointed to the Commission on Dental Accreditation’s Review Committee on Prosthodontics Education for a three-year term, ending in 2018. This committee is responsible for reviewing all policy matters, site visit reports and applications for accreditation in the dental specialty of prosthodontics, which are submitted to CODA for action.

College of Medicine

Duane A. Mitchell, M.D., Ph.D., co-director of the Preston A. Wells Jr. Center for Brain Tumor Therapy and director of the UF Brain Tumor Immunotherapy Program, has been awarded a $1 million Quantum Grant from Hyundai Hope on Wheels, a nonprofit focused on finding a cure for childhood cancer. The Quantum grants, new this year, recognize institutions committed to transformational research on pediatric cancers with the lowest survival rates.

Betsy A. Shenkman, Ph.D., a professor and chair of the department of health outcomes and policy, was appointed to serve as national co-chair of the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute’s PCORnet Pediatrics Cross-Cutting Research Group. The new group will help the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute set national priorities for pediatric research using the institute’s nationwide research network, PCORnet. This network seeks to link large numbers of patients, health care systems, clinicians and researchers across the country to accelerate the translation of research findings into patient-centered care.

College of Nursing

Jacqueline Maye, a doctoral student in the department of clinical and health psychology, has received a Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award from the National Institute on Aging. The award will support her dissertation research on the effects of mindfulness meditation on attentional control in older adults. She has also been selected as a 2016 Research Fellow by the Mind and Life Summer Research Institute.

Dental faculty inducted

In May, the UF College of Dentistry’s Xi Omicron Chapter of Omicron Kappa Upsilon, a national dental honor society, inducted Marcelle Nasimento, D.D.S., Ph.D., and Marc Ottenga, D.D.S., both in the department of restorative dental sciences, and Patricia Xirau-Probert, Ph.D., in the department of community dentistry and behavioral science. Faculty members elected to the society have made outstanding contributions to the art, science or literature of dentistry and have served at least three years as a faculty member.

Nursing faculty receive research award

Several UF College of Nursing faculty members recently received the 2016 Southern Nursing Research Society’s Research in Nursing and Health Authorship Award for a research paper. TheCo-authorswas assistant professor Brian Ahn, Ph.D., ARNP. Co-authors included associate professor Joyce Stechmiller, Ph.D., ARNP, FAAN; Kirbo endowed chair and executive associate dean Debra Lyon, R.N., Ph.D., FAAN; research associate professor Cyndi Garvan, Ph.D.; and UF College of Dentistry researcher Roger Fillingim, Ph.D. The award supports high-quality, peer-reviewed research that covers a broad range of research and theory impacting nursing practice or other health disciplines.
