College of dentistry

Roberta Pileggi, D.D.S., M.S., has been named associate dean and director of the UF School of Advanced Dental Sciences and will continue in her role as the chair of the department of endodontics, a position she’s held since January 2010. She has served as interim director for the School of Advanced Dental Sciences since September 2012.

Wendell Willis, D.D.S., was appointed interim chair of the UF department of restorative dental sciences. He will continue serving in his current role as division director for predoctoral general dentistry in restorative dental sciences. He has been with the college since 1977 when he joined the department of operative dentistry as a visiting professor while continuing to work in private practice in Gainesville.

College of pharmacy

Hartmut Derendorf, Ph.D., a distinguished professor and chair of pharmaceutics, has received the International Society of Pharmacometrics Leadership Award for 2013 for outstanding sustained leadership, mentorship and outreach contributions to the field of pharmacometrics and to the development of the strategic vision for the future direction of the field. Derendorf was recognized and received a commemorative plaque on May 12 at the opening session of the American Conference on Pharmacometrics in Fort Lauderdale.

Hendrik Luesch, Ph.D., an associate professor in medicinal chemistry has been selected as one of 17 delegates to represent the United States at the Transatlantic Frontiers of Chemistry meeting in August at Kloster Seon, Germany. The TFOC is designed to foster international exchange and interdisciplinary collaboration between young chemical scientists. Luesch received a grant in April to research possible cancer drugs found in marine natural products.

W. Thomas Smith, J.D., Pharm. D., a clinical associate professor in pharmaceutical outcomes and policy, has been invited to participate in the 2013-2014 American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy Academic Leadership Fellows Program. The program focuses on personal and interpersonal competencies for leadership, practical management skills of an academic pharmacy administrator, as well as leadership in advocacy and the profession.

College of public health and health professions

Babette Brumback, Ph.D., a professor of biostatistics in the College of Public Health and Health Professions and the College of Medicine, was named 2014 chairelect of the American Statistical Association’s Section on Statistics in Epidemiology. She is also the 2013 treasurer/secretary of the Florida Chapter of the American Statistical Association.

Arch G. “Chip” Mainous III , Ph.D., of the Medical University of South Carolina, has been named chair of the department of health services research, management and policy. Mainous will also hold the position of Florida Blue Endowed Chair, which was created in 2007 by Florida Blue, Florida’s Blue Cross Blue Shield plan, to provide support to the chair of the UF department of health services research, management and policy.
