Built for better sight
In July, UF Health opened the Research to Prevent Blindness Mildred Krahmer Sanders and William Clifford Sanders Laboratory for Vision Research, a space designed to spark innovation in vision research and help researchers in their quest to produce more effective treatments and preventions for vision loss and blindness. The 3,400-square-foot core lab was built with the help of a $600,000 grant from the nonprofit group Research to Prevent Blindness. The grant was made possible through a gift to from the trust of Mildred Krahmer Sanders and William Clifford Sanders. “The new lab will give us significant opportunities to advance our research,” said Sonal Tuli, M.D., chair of the department of ophthalmology, shown here with the Sanders’ nephew, Donald Krahmer. “Our department is nationally recognized for vision research and novel therapies to treat blinding eye diseases such as diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration and retinal degeneration. This laboratory will allow us to enhance this research as well as expand our portfolio significantly by increasing research space and resources.” — April Frawley Lacey
